Cubitt Cup victory Saturday 24th March 2012

Hillside 3 (1)   Horsford 0

Hillside’s players scored a resounding 3-0 victory in the Cubitt Cup final on Saturday. We went into the match with the concern that we might not be able to cope without one of our stronger players  who had gone to America on holiday. The other team knew this and were delighted, however this worry never showed as from the onset of the game Hillside were dominant.  Throughout the game they were strong in the challenge and relentless in their covering and workrate.  If one of them missed a tackle another was covering behind and the midfielder players were always able to back this up providing a real threat to Horsford’s attack and defence and working tirelessly all game. The attack was effective throughout, constantly worrying the Horsford defence and giving them no time to settle on the ball. The captain led by example – he was never going to be beaten in this final , his long throw-ins being a constant problem for Horsford throughout the game and his free kicks were equally effective.

From the start Hillside spent long periods in the opposition half, there were a number of half chances before one those long throws was headed in by a Horsford defender after a sustained period of pressure. Hillside’s players did not let up and apart from a couple of breaks by Horsford’s attack we coped well until half time. After the break Horsford were more of an attacking force and they produced a number of promising attacks, the most dangerous being a 1 on 1 with our goalkeeper  and although he had rarely been called on in the match he made a superb stop to keep Hillside in front. From that moment on Hillside seemed to take the initiative, there were a number of chances that were close until finally after another period of pressure there was foul in the penalty area and after a long injury break the captain of Hillside stepped up to take a tremendously cool penalty  to give them some breathing space. After more sustained pressure Hillside scored with a low shot  from the edge of the penalty area to secure the victory.

This was a tremendous victory and thanks must go to all the players and the parents who were so supportive.

Girls success!  21/3/12

In the second of their league games the girls Year 6 team played Colman Primary School. In a very close fought encounter the teams were locked at 0-0 at half time. However the Colman team took an early lead in the second half and things looked grim. The girls however rallied and once the powerful play of our captain  led to an  classy equaliser the girls really worked hard and deservedly achieved a win thanks to another piece of individual play. Mention should be made of Danielle’s excellent and powerful (some would say scary) defence and the hard running and effort. Well done – we are now looking forward to playing Drayton!

It all started so well…. Year 5 footballers were in action on Thursday 22nd March at the Year 5 7 a side tournament at UEA . After a storming start in which they beat George White School 4 – 0 they were held to a 0-0 draw by Wensum in a game they dominated. In their third match they lost narrowly to St Thomas More 1-0 although we had the bulk of the play. The last game was against Drayton and as we had played 3 games in a row by this time we appeared tired – at half time we were 1-0 down and the game was still anyones but 2 quite brilliant goals from Drayton led to a collapse and we ended up on the end of a 5-0 beating!

However you learn more from your mistakes and Mr Roy will admit that the Year 5s had very little time to be sorted as he was mainly involved with Year 6 – lets look to next year!

Do not forget Year 5 footballers! We haven’t see above!

Year 5 will be in action at UEA next Thursday in the Norwich Year 5 tournament. Keep in touch via the Hillside website

Girl footballers  will be busy!

Year 6 girls football team will be busy next week when they play 3 matches in as many days. On Monday they play Taverham, Tuesday it’s Drayton and Wednesday they play Colman. Fixture congestion at other schools means this is the only way to fit them in! Beat that Premier League!

Only one match left in the Year 6  7 a -side league.

Year 6 boys team have one match left in their league (The Ireland Cup) this will be against Kinsale on Monday 26th March at Hillside. Presently they are unbeaten in the league winning 4 and drawing 2 of their games. Keep up the good work.

Team for Cubitt Cup match v Falcon 14/3/12

A fantastic footballing week – by Sol and George
Carrow Park tournament
On the 23   February 2012 a number of pupils at Hillside Avenue Primary school were selected to
play in a 5 a-side tournament at Carrow Park.The
team players were …..

They had a marvellous time and all played very well, and tried their best, throughout the tournament. (even at the toughest of times.)
They came second (behind Martham) and were very unfortunate not to win.
However they still a fantastic time, as they did come second out of 5, good teams. They beat one of the best teams 5-0, and enjoyed a phenomenal 8-1 win over Ludham.
(Below there are some charts to show the football team results)

Tuesdays 7-a-side Match

On Tuesday 21st February Hillside played against Taverham – who earlier in the season beat us 7-3. (possibly the toughest team in the whole league.)
For the first half both defenders (David and George) Had to worry about Taverham’s attacks, but both played well and kept the score at 0-0. Hillside attackers (Connor, Brandon and Sam) put Taverhams defense under pressure. At half-time the score was 0-0.
In the second half Hillside got of to a flying start and scored to make it 1-0.
Taverham kept the pressure on Hillsides defence. Then with 5 mins to go they scored to make it 1-1 after all there pressure.
The final score was 1-1.

match

On Wednesday 22nd February Hillside played West Earlham in a 7-a-side football match. The same team started that match as Taverham.  But Hillside got of to a flying start! In the first few minutes they had scored, and were dominating
possession.  Soon they scored again from the penalty spot. By half time they were 3-0 to the good.
The second half the team that started  the match started the second half but some were taken off after the score moved on to 5-0.  Then with the last kick of the game  it was 6-0.

Football – Year 6 September/October 2011

The football season is now underway, Hillisde are entering the Norwich 7-a-side leagues, the Cubitt Cup, the Jack Ramm Trophy, the Phil Hill Cup (Year 5 and 6), the girls leagues (Spring Term) and the Year 5 UEA tournament (Spring Term).

Jack Ramm Trophy 29/9/11

The games were played on what was the hottest September day for 30 years. The conditions were too warm for cricket, let alone football! However the 17 teams all started at 10.15 am playing in small leagues. Hillside drawn against St Williams Way, Magdalen Gates and St Thomas More schools in our group. The first match looked like the decider as we took on St Williams (our last game of last season was against St Williams Way as well! We lost 2-0) this time we played really well and after some early scares were eventually winners by 3 goals to 1. The next game was against a weaker team and we won this very easily 6-0 probably too easily as we then went on to lose very narrowly to St Thomas More by 2 goals to 1. However this meant we were runners-up in the group and progressed to the quarter finals to play last years winners – Drayton. This game was probably our best of the day and we ended up winning 5-0  with all the goals being of a high quality. In the semi-finals we met Firside, another of the City’s top school teams, and we narrowly won 1-0 , surviving a great deal of late pressure to keep the lead.

By this time the players were very tired indeed – it was after 1.00 pm and we had been playing in intense heat for 3 hours. The final was against last years runners-up White Woman Lane and after a goaless first half we took the lead early in the second half. But by this time tiredness was beginning to tell and after conceding an equaliser 2 minutes from the end we lost out to a goal in the last minute, in fairness the game could have gone either way and there was very little difference between the two sides. Final Score Hillside 1 White Woman Lane 2

All the players were a credit to the school and their play and behaviour was brilliant. I have been involved in this fixture for over 25 years and this is the first time Hillside have ever got beyond the first round! The players thoroughly deserved their runners-up medals.

Cubitt Cup First Round 4/10/11

This is main cup competition for Primary Schools in Norwich and in the first round it wasn’t hard to guess that we would once again be drawn against… St Williams Way!

This was an excellent game of football that really had everything. At half time the score was 1-0 to St Williams and that is a fair reflection of the play; however early in the second half Connor Bagley scored the goal of the game to make it 1-1. Hillside then  dominated this half and had enough chances to win - however it took an important stop  to prevent a breakaway goal in the last minutes. At the end of full time scores were locked at 1-1. The first period of extra time saw St Williams take the lead again only for Hillside to score with a header from a corner in the last seconds of this period! The scores stayed locked at 2-2 and both sides cancelled each other out in the last 5 minutes.

Penalties were used to decide the tie with Hillside taking the first one .  5 Hillside players bravely volunteered to take the pressure and their accuracy along with strong goalkeeping ensured a Hillside victory by 4 -2 on penalties. We march on to the quarter-finals where we meet…. St Thomas More.

Well done everyone! Fantastic game, fantastic result and great sportsmanship all round.

Mr Roy October 2011
